Who needs more than one Gmail account in their AI assistant?
Freelancers, founders and anyone who splits mail across 2 to 5 inboxes. When a multi-account MCP server fits and when ChatGPT native or open source is better.
Anyone whose questions regularly span more than one inbox: freelancers with client inboxes, founders who split personal, company and billing mail, and people with a separate job-search or family address. If you have one inbox, your assistant's built-in connector is enough.
Why do people ask for more than one Gmail account in an assistant?
Their mail lives in several places, and users report that the built-in connectors tend to hold one account at a time. Users have asked for multi-account support in Claude and in ChatGPT, often describing the same routine: "personal and work", and a swap of the connection between questions. One guide says the assistant holds "one account at a time" (Drag).
The cost is repetition. You ask in one account, switch, ask again and merge the answers by hand. The need is strongest when the answer lives in a different inbox from the one you connected.
Which situations drive the need?
Several recur: a freelancer with personal mail plus client inboxes, a founder with personal, company and billing addresses, someone chasing receipts across accounts, a person planning travel from two inboxes, a job search in its own address and a household with a family account. A freelancer-focused write-up describes the fear of mixing client context.
We have not surveyed users, so these situations are expected, not measured. Here is how each maps to a setup:
| Situation | What you ask | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Freelancer with 2 to 4 client inboxes plus personal | "What is open in each client inbox?" | Multi-account read-only server, or ChatGPT native if you only use ChatGPT |
| Founder: personal, company, billing | "Search all my accounts for failed payments" | Multi-account server |
| Receipts and invoices across accounts | "List 2026 receipts from this vendor" | Multi-account server |
| Travel confirmations in two inboxes | "Build one itinerary for November" | Multi-account server |
| Job search in a separate address | "Which companies have not replied?" | Multi-account server, or the built-in connector if that is your only extra inbox |
| One inbox only | Anything | Your client's built-in Gmail connector |
| Team sharing inboxes | "Who answered this client?" | A team product, not Nickbox |
When does something other than Nickbox fit better?
Several alternatives win in specific cases.
- ChatGPT is your only assistant and you want it to send mail. Press coverage reports that ChatGPT has supported several Gmail accounts natively since 2026-08-28, with permission to send mail. Use that.
- You want free and full control. An open-source multi-account server costs nothing, though you create your own Google Cloud OAuth client and run it yourself.
- You need many integrations, or sending, in one connector. Composio is a broad platform whose Gmail toolkit includes sending.
- You need Outlook or IMAP. Nickbox does not support them in this release.
- You need shared team inboxes. Nickbox is built for one person.
The full comparison puts these side by side.
When does Nickbox fit?
Nickbox fits when you use Claude, Cursor, VS Code, Gemini CLI or another MCP client, have 2 to 5 Gmail or Workspace inboxes and only need to read and search. One MCP URL covers all of them, each inbox gets a nickname, and the permission is gmail.readonly, so the assistant cannot send, draft or delete.
It also fits if you use ChatGPT but prefer an assistant that can never write to your inboxes, or if you want the same inboxes in several tools. It works in ChatGPT developer mode, in the Gemini app through Spark custom apps (US, personal accounts) and in Gemini CLI.
What does it cost, and what is the catch?
Nickbox costs US$5 a month or US$48 a year, with a 7-day trial that needs a card. The catch is the beta: Nickbox has not finished Google's verification yet, so Google lets it connect only 100 Gmail accounts in total, and each one counts even after it is disconnected. That is why places are limited. See pricing for terms and security for what is stored: connection metadata and an encrypted refresh token per inbox. We do not write message contents to our database or logs.
To try it, pick your assistant's guide: Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Cursor, VS Code or Claude Code.
Questions
Do I need a multi-account setup if I have one Gmail?
No. Your assistant's built-in Gmail connector covers a single account. A multi-account server matters once your questions span more than one inbox.
Is Nickbox for teams?
No. It is for one person with up to 5 inboxes. Shared inboxes, collaboration and team access are not part of this release.
Is a multi-account Gmail MCP server worth paying for if I already use ChatGPT?
Often not, if ChatGPT is your only assistant. Press coverage reports that since 2026-08-28 it supports several Gmail accounts natively. A paid server makes sense when you also use Claude, Cursor or VS Code, or want read-only access.
Who should run an open-source server instead?
Anyone comfortable creating a Google Cloud project, an OAuth client and hosting the process, who wants full control and no subscription.
