Gmail connector vs Gmail MCP server: which one works with several accounts?

Claude's Gmail connector reads one connected Google account. ChatGPT added several in August 2026. When a Gmail MCP server such as Nickbox is the better fit.

Updated · 4 min read

If you use one inbox, or only ChatGPT, the connector built into your assistant is enough. If you want several Gmail accounts in Claude, or the same inboxes in more than one assistant, a Gmail MCP server such as Nickbox fits better. Claude's help page, checked on 2026-10-03, describes a single connected Google account.

What is the difference between a Gmail connector and a Gmail MCP server?

A Gmail connector is the plug-in you switch on inside an assistant. A Gmail MCP server is the program behind a custom connector, and MCP is the open standard assistants use to talk to outside tools. Claude calls both things "connectors". That is why the two terms get mixed up.

The built-in connectors in Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini are made by the assistant's company and tied to that assistant. A server like Nickbox is hosted by a third party, and you add its URL as a custom connector. The same server then works in every client that accepts one. The guide to MCP servers explains the idea without jargon.

What does each official Gmail connector support today?

Claude's connector reads and searches mail, drafts, and sends with your approval, for one connected Google account. ChatGPT's reads, composes and sends, and press coverage says it handles several accounts since 2026-08-28. Gemini's public details on several accounts are thin. Everything below is as of 2026-10-03.

Claude ChatGPT Gemini
Read and search Yes (Claude help) Yes Yes, through its Google Workspace connection
Send mail Yes, asks for approval by default (Claude help) Yes, per 9to5Mac Unconfirmed
Several Google accounts Help page says Claude accesses "the Google account you've connected"; third parties report a second login replaces the first Yes since 2026-08-28 on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, per press; account limit unknown Unconfirmed; third parties say one at a time
Source type Official help page Press coverage (OpenAI release notes not opened) Third-party guides

We could not open OpenAI's or Google's help pages from our environment, so ChatGPT and Gemini rows rest on press and third-party reports. Those products change monthly. Read the vendor's page before you decide.

When is the official connector enough?

Use the built-in connector when you have one inbox, when you only use ChatGPT, or when you want the assistant to send mail. It needs no extra account, no extra bill and no extra link to paste. A hosted server would add a step with no gain in those cases.

ChatGPT users with several inboxes should start with the native option. We say so in our ChatGPT guide as well.

When does a Gmail MCP server make sense?

It makes sense when you need several Gmail inboxes in Claude, when you switch between assistants, or when you want the assistant to read mail but never send it. Each inbox gets a nickname, so a question can name work or billing, or ask all of them.

  • Several inboxes in Claude. One custom connector holds up to 5 inboxes. See connect multiple Gmail accounts to Claude.
  • One setup for every assistant. The same URL works in Claude, ChatGPT developer mode, Gemini CLI, Cursor and VS Code. Gemini's app needs a Spark custom app, which has regional limits, covered in the Gemini guide.
  • Read-only. Nickbox holds only the gmail.readonly permission, so it cannot send, draft or delete.

What are the limits of Nickbox?

Nickbox is in a limited beta. Google has not verified the app yet, so connecting an inbox shows an unverified-app warning and Google lets the app connect only 100 Gmail accounts. It reads mail only: no sending, no drafts, no team inboxes, no Outlook. You can read the warning explained. If you need to send mail from the assistant, pick another option.

Price: US$5 a month or US$48 a year, up to 5 inboxes, with a 7-day trial.

Which one should I pick?

Questions

Is a Gmail connector the same thing as a Gmail MCP server?

They sit at different layers. A connector is the plug-in you switch on inside an assistant. An MCP server is the program behind a custom connector. Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini ship their own Gmail connectors, and you can also add a Gmail MCP server as a custom connector.

Does Claude's Gmail connector support several Google accounts?

Claude's help page says Claude can only access the Gmail, Calendar and Drive data of the Google account you connected, and it does not mention several accounts at once. Third-party guides report that a second sign-in replaces the first. Check Anthropic's page for changes.

Does ChatGPT's Gmail connector support several accounts?

According to press coverage, since 2026-08-28 ChatGPT can connect several Gmail accounts on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, with permission to read, compose and send. We could not open OpenAI's release notes, so the account limit is unknown.

When is the official connector enough?

When you use one inbox, or only ChatGPT, or you want the assistant to send mail. A Gmail MCP server adds value when you use more than one assistant, want one name per inbox, or want a read-only permission.

Does Gemini's Gmail extension support several accounts?

We found no official statement that it does. Third-party guides say Gemini reads one Google account at a time. Treat that as unconfirmed and check Google's help pages.
