Yes. Press coverage reports that since 2026-08-28 ChatGPT connects several Gmail accounts natively on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, with permission to send mail. If you only use ChatGPT, start with ChatGPT's Gmail connector. A custom read-only MCP connector like Nickbox fits when you want read-only access or the same inboxes in other tools.

What changed in ChatGPT in August 2026?

Press coverage from 9to5Mac and Notebookcheck reports that ChatGPT added support for several Gmail, Calendar and Contacts accounts on 2026-08-28. It applies to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans, on web, desktop, iOS and Android, and write access comes with it.

Before that date, people were asking for this on OpenAI's community forum, and a custom MCP server was the only route. That changed in August 2026. The account limit is not stated in the coverage we read, so we do not state one.

What is the difference between the native option and a custom MCP connector?

The native option is built in and can write. A custom MCP connector is something you add yourself, and what it can do depends on the server. Nickbox is read-only, so ChatGPT can search and read your mail through it but cannot send, draft or delete.

ChatGPT native Nickbox as a custom MCP connector
Setup Connect Google accounts inside ChatGPT Developer Mode, then add the MCP URL
Permission Read, compose and send gmail.readonly only
Plans Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise Developer Mode plans (see below)
Where it works ChatGPT ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini CLI, Cursor, VS Code, Gemini via Spark
Naming ChatGPT's own account handling Your nicknames: work, personal, billing
Price Included in your ChatGPT plan US$5 a month or US$48 a year, plus your ChatGPT plan

If you use only ChatGPT and want it to send, the native option wins on cost and convenience. Nickbox earns its place when you also work in other MCP clients, or when you prefer an assistant that can never send from your inboxes.

How do I add a custom MCP connector to ChatGPT?

Turn on Developer Mode, add a new connector, paste your MCP URL and approve the sign-in. Exact menu names move often, so follow OpenAI's Developer Mode article and our ChatGPT guide for the current path.

  1. Connect your inboxes in Nickbox and give each a nickname.
  2. Copy your MCP URL from the dashboard.
  3. In ChatGPT, enable Developer Mode (on Business, a workspace admin enables it under Workspace Settings, then Permissions and Roles).
  4. Add a new connector and paste the URL.
  5. Approve the OAuth sign-in, then ask: "Which accounts do you see?"

Which ChatGPT plans can use custom MCP servers?

It depends on the kind of access. On Plus and Pro, custom MCP servers in Developer Mode are limited to read and fetch actions. Full MCP with write actions is in beta for Business, Enterprise and Edu. Because Nickbox only reads, the Plus and Pro limit does not get in the way.

On Business, a workspace admin has to enable Developer Mode before members can add a connector. If you are not the admin, send them the ChatGPT guide and ask for the permission. OpenAI changes these plan rules, so check the help article before you pay for a plan just for this.

Should I pick native or custom?

Pick the native option if ChatGPT is your only assistant and you want it to compose and send. Pick a custom read-only connector if you use more than one assistant, want to hold the permission to read only, or already keep your inboxes organized under nicknames.

Two cases where neither is ideal: if you need Outlook or IMAP, Nickbox does not cover them yet, and if you need shared team inboxes, it is not built for that. Pricing and the beta cap (100 users, because Nickbox has not finished Google's verification yet) are on the pricing page, and what we store is on the security page.

Questions

Does ChatGPT support more than one Gmail account?

Yes. Press coverage reports support for several Gmail, Calendar and Contacts accounts from 2026-08-28 on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, across web, desktop, iOS and Android.

Can the native Gmail connector send email?

Yes. Press coverage describes the native Gmail connection as read, compose and send, so it has write access. A read-only MCP connector does not.

Do I need a paid ChatGPT plan to use a custom MCP server?

Custom MCP servers need Developer Mode. On Plus and Pro they are limited to read and fetch actions, and full MCP with write actions is in beta for Business, Enterprise and Edu.

Why would I use Nickbox in ChatGPT instead of the native option?

For a read-only permission and nicknames you control, or because you want the same inboxes in Claude, Cursor or VS Code too. If you only use ChatGPT and want it to send mail, use the native option.
