Gmail MCP servers compared (2026): multiple accounts, setup, price

Open-source, Google's preview server, Composio, mailmcp.io and Nickbox compared on several accounts, setup, sending and price, as of October 2026.

Updated · 3 min read

There is no single best Gmail MCP server; the right one depends on whether you want to run it yourself, send mail, or search several inboxes with no setup. This comparison, dated 2026-10-03, covers open-source servers, Google's own preview server, two hosted services and Nickbox, which is our product.

How did we compare them?

We compared each option on five questions: where it runs, whether it handles several Gmail accounts, whether it can send mail, what setup it asks for, and what it costs. We read project pages and listings on 2026-10-03, and could not open some vendor pages from our environment, so each row says where its facts come from. We ran none of these servers ourselves.

Prices and features change often. Treat every price as "listed when we looked" and confirm on the vendor's page. We did not use popularity numbers or rank anything.

Which Gmail MCP servers exist and how do they differ?

Option Runs where Several Gmail accounts Can send mail Setup Listed price
Open-source single-account servers (for example GongRzhe/Gmail-MCP-Server) Your machine No, one login per install Yes in the projects we read Your Google Cloud project and OAuth client Free
Open-source multi-account servers (gmail-mcp-multi, gmail-multi-mcp, shcallaway) Your machine or your own server Yes, by alias or account argument Depends on the project Your own OAuth client and hosting Free
Google's official Gmail MCP server Google-hosted Not designed for it; one Google Cloud setup No send tool, per Drag Your own Google Cloud project and OAuth client Developer preview, unconfirmed
Composio Hosted Yes, a label per connection Yes Composio account, then a custom connector Free tier and paid plans; see Composio's pricing page
mailmcp.io Hosted, EU Per-mailbox pricing suggests several Yes, read, send and reply Sign up, connect each mailbox Listing shows a free 1-mailbox plan and paid per mailbox
mcp-email Your machine Yes, accounts set in the config Yes IMAP and SMTP credentials One-time purchase, per listing
Nickbox Hosted Yes, up to 5 inboxes with nicknames No, read-only Sign in with Google, paste one URL US$5 a month or US$48 a year, 7-day trial

The listing facts for mailmcp.io and mcp-email come from directory pages, which can be out of date. Check the vendors for current terms.

What do you give up with each approach?

A server you run yourself gives you control and costs setup time. A hosted service saves the setup and puts a third party between your assistant and Gmail. The open-source servers need your own Google Cloud OAuth client, and unless you publish the app, Google limits test-mode logins to 7 days. You can read about that in the unverified app warning guide.

Sending mail is the other trade. Servers that can send give your assistant more reach and a larger risk if an email contains hostile instructions. Our safety article covers that.

Where does Nickbox fit, and where does it not?

Nickbox fits one person with 2 to 5 Gmail or Workspace inboxes who uses Claude, Gemini CLI, Cursor, VS Code or ChatGPT developer mode and wants read-only search. Each inbox gets a nickname, and the assistant can search one, several or all of them.

Its real limits:

  • Limited public beta: few places while Google's verification is pending.
  • Google has not verified the app, so connecting an inbox shows an unverified-app warning and Google caps it at 100 connected Gmail accounts.
  • Read-only: no sending, drafts or deletes.
  • One person, up to 5 inboxes. No teams, Outlook or IMAP in this release.

See pricing for terms.

Which Gmail MCP server should you choose?

If you want Look at
Free and full control, comfortable with Google Cloud An open-source multi-account server
One server for Gmail and many other apps, with sending Composio
Hosted mailbox access with sending, EU hosting mailmcp.io
Gmail plus other providers over IMAP, one purchase mcp-email
Read-only search over several inboxes, no cloud setup Nickbox
One inbox in one assistant The assistant's built-in connector, see the connector comparison

If you are ready to connect, the setup article walks through each route.

Questions

What is the best Gmail MCP server?

It depends on what you need. For several inboxes read by one person with no setup, a hosted read-only server fits. For full control, an open-source server you run yourself. For sending mail or many other apps, a platform such as Composio. We do not rank them.

Does Google offer an official Gmail MCP server?

Third-party coverage reports a Google-hosted server at gmailmcp.googleapis.com, in developer preview as of August 2026, with search, read, labels and drafts but no send tool. It needs your own Google Cloud project. We could not open Google's page, so confirm the details there.

Which Gmail MCP servers support several accounts?

Several open-source projects do, such as gmail-mcp-multi and gmail-multi-mcp, usually with your own Google OAuth client. Hosted options include Composio, which labels each connection, and Nickbox, which gives each inbox a nickname.

Is a free Gmail MCP server safe to use?

It can be, but you are trusting the code and the permission it asks for. Check the OAuth scope, prefer read-only when you only need search, and keep the token on your own machine. Read our safety guide before connecting.

Why is Nickbox not the right choice for everyone?

It is in a limited public beta, shows Google's unverified-app warning, reads mail only, and covers one person with up to 5 inboxes. If you need sending, shared inboxes or Outlook, pick another option.
