Connect a Gmail inbox

Add a Gmail or Google Workspace inbox to Nickbox: the one read-only permission Google asks for, what Nickbox can do with it, and how to disconnect.

Updated · 2 min read

Status: available today. Gmail and Google Workspace inboxes are the only kind you can connect right now, and they work read-only.

Connect it

  1. Sign in to Nickbox and open Connect in the dashboard.
  2. Choose Google and approve access on Google's screen. Repeat for every inbox. Each one can belong to a different Google account or organization.
  3. Give the inbox a nickname, such as work or billing. Your assistant uses it to know where to look.

While Google has not finished verifying Nickbox, it shows an "unverified app" screen on the first connection. That is expected, and this guide walks through it. If your Google Workspace administrator blocks outside apps, see the note for administrators.

What Nickbox can access

Nickbox asks Google for one permission per inbox, named gmail.readonly. It means permission to read your mail, never to send or delete. It lets Nickbox search and read messages. It does not let Nickbox send, draft, label, move or delete anything. We also ask for openid and email once, to sign you in.

Messages pass through memory when your assistant asks for them and are not stored. The trust center lists what we keep.

Modes for a Gmail inbox

Mode Available today What your assistant can do
read Yes, and the only one Search and read
draft Coming, not available yet Also write drafts. Nothing is sent.
send_approval Coming, not available yet Also prepare messages. Nothing leaves until you approve that exact message in your dashboard.
full Coming, not available yet Also organize mail. A message to a new recipient still needs your approval.

When the higher modes ship, Google will ask for an extra permission only when you raise an inbox to a mode that needs it: gmail.compose for drafts, gmail.send for sending and gmail.modify for organizing. Nickbox will never ask for Google's full-access permission, and it will never delete mail permanently. Nickbox also enforces the mode on its own server, because a Google permission alone does not guarantee it. Read the rules in the trust center.

Disconnect it

Remove the inbox in the dashboard. Nickbox revokes its access with Google at once and deletes its connection data. You can also remove Nickbox at myaccount.google.com/permissions.
