# Gmailify and POP are ending: search several inboxes with AI

> Press coverage says Google is ending Gmailify and POP fetching. Forwarding and delegation give an AI no per-inbox answers. Use an MCP server with nicknames.

Press coverage reports that Google is ending Gmailify and the POP feature "Check mail from other accounts". Forwarding and delegation are the usual substitutes, but they happen inside one account, so an AI assistant loses track of which inbox each message came from. Connecting each inbox separately keeps those answers per inbox.

## What is happening to Gmailify and POP in Gmail?

Gmailify and POP fetching, the feature that pulled mail from other accounts into Gmail, are being shut down, according to press coverage from January 2026: [TidBITS](https://tidbits.com/2026/01/12/gmail-to-end-pop-fetching-and-gmailify-features/) (12 January) and [9to5Google](https://9to5google.com/2026/01/23/gmail-gmailify-pop-shutting-down/) (23 January). Sources differ on the exact cutoff, so check Gmail Help for your account.

Many people used these features to read several inboxes in one Gmail. With them gone, the question returns: how do I look across my inboxes at once, and how does an assistant do it?

## Why don't forwarding and POP work for AI search?

They merge mail inside one account, and the origin is lost. After forwarding, a message from a client's inbox is just another message in your main Gmail. The assistant cannot answer "what is waiting in `billing`?" because `billing` no longer exists as a separate place.

This is our reasoning from how the features work, not a finding from a test. Two practical limits follow:

1. Per-inbox questions fail, because origin is gone or only survives as a label you set up by hand.
2. You keep a copy of the mail in a second account, which you may not want for client or company mail. That is two places to secure and two places to clean up.

## Can Gmail delegation fill the gap?

Delegation is built for a person giving another person access, not for connecting an assistant to several accounts. According to [Missive's overview](https://missiveapp.com/blog/gmail-delegation), it is all or nothing and does not cross domains: a Workspace account cannot delegate to an @gmail.com address. The delegate sees the whole inbox, not a narrowed slice.

For an AI assistant that means giving broad access to a single identity, and it still would not tell the assistant which inbox a message belongs to. It works as a workaround for human triage.

## What works instead?

A connector that authorizes each inbox separately and gives it a name. The assistant then calls the right inbox, or all of them, and every result carries its source. This is what an MCP server with nicknames does.

| Approach | Keeps inbox identity | Fits AI search | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gmailify / POP fetch | No, merges into one | No | Ending |
| Forwarding to one account | No, unless labeled by hand | Partly | Duplicates mail |
| Delegation | Partly | No | All or nothing, no cross-domain |
| One MCP connector per inbox | Yes | Yes | Many entries to set up |
| One MCP URL with nicknames | Yes | Yes | Needs a hosted server or your own |

Nickbox is one version of the last row. Connect up to 5 inboxes, name them `work`, `personal`, `billing`, paste one URL into your assistant and ask "search `work` and `billing`". It is read-only (`gmail.readonly`), does not write message contents to its database or logs, stores connection metadata and an encrypted refresh token, and costs US$5 a month or US$48 a year. See [pricing](/en/pricing) and [security](/en/security).

Whether the merged copy is acceptable depends on the mail. For newsletters it is fine. For client or company mail, many people prefer the original inbox to stay the single source.

## How do I migrate away from Gmailify?

Keep your original accounts as they are and stop depending on one merged inbox. Then connect each account to the assistant.

1. List the inboxes you used to merge and give each a nickname.
2. Connect them to a multi-account MCP server, such as Nickbox, one at a time.
3. Paste the URL into your assistant. Guides: [Claude](/en/docs/claude), [ChatGPT](/en/docs/chatgpt), [Gemini](/en/docs/gemini), [Cursor](/en/docs/cursor).
4. Test with "Which accounts do you see?" and then a search that names one inbox.
5. Keep any forwarding you want for human reading, and let the assistant use the real inboxes.

## FAQ

**Is Gmailify being discontinued?**

Yes. Press coverage from January 2026 reports that Gmailify and the 'Check mail from other accounts' POP feature are ending. We do not state an exact cutoff date because sources differ.

**Can I forward all my accounts into one Gmail instead?**

You can, and a human can then search one place. An AI assistant would then see one inbox with mixed mail and lose which original inbox each message belonged to.

**Does Gmail delegation give an AI access to several accounts?**

Delegation lets one person open another account's mail as a delegate. It is all or nothing, does not cross domains such as Workspace to @gmail.com, and is not designed for AI connectors.

**What replaces Gmailify for AI search?**

An MCP server that connects each inbox separately and labels it, so the assistant can search one inbox, several or all and show which one each result came from.
